MSG Phillip R. McGinnis Sr. - Daily Ardmoreite

McGinnis Sr., 81, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2018, in the Chapel of Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home in Marietta with Rev. Sharen Hale of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Ardmore under the direction of Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home & Cremation Services.Born Nov. 29, 1936, at New Castle, Ind., to Fred McGinnis and Ercelle Hedrick McGinnis, Phillip passed away at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at his residence in the Enville community.He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Kevin; youngest sister, Adrienne; his father-in-law, Dale W. Goodin; his mother-in-law, Laura Belle Kouns Goodin; three brothers-in-law, William E. and Thomas J. Goodin, and Richard G. Jackson; and his great-grandchild, Kaydence Elizabeth Martin.   Raised in New Castle, Ind., Phillip enlisted in the United States Air Force after graduating from High School and served 23 years on active duty. He and Cecile Yvone Goodin married on Aug.15, 1958, in Ardmore, had three sons and enjoyed life and travel.His overseas tours took him to Iceland and Japan, (where his first and second sons were born), Thailand, and Sergeant McGinnis was a five-time Vietnam veteran. He also had stateside tours in San Antonio, Ardmore, Amarillo, Mojave Desert, Albuquerque, and Oklahoma City. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with 2 oak leaf clusters and V-device for valor, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with 4 oak leaf clusters, the Army Good Conduct Medal with two bronze loops, the National Defense Service Medal with 1 bronze star, the Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, the Small Arms Expert Marksman Ribbon, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with the 60 device, before retiring as a Master Sergeant. With Provost William Hackett's blessing, the professors took programs and diploma presentation tubes and drove to Clermont to surprise Brianna Perez, Brandee Pietrzak and Heather Faulk with a impromptu ceremony at the hotel before the game. They wore their softball uniforms under cap and gown, while Fairchild provided a 20-minutue commencement address. All three students plan to continue on with the MBA program at SEU.Top Chef of Polk CountyAchievement Academy held its fourth annual Top Chef of Polk County on May 7 at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland. More than 200 guests enjoyed dishes prepare by chefs and then judged each chef on their creation. Chef Patrick Schaefer from Patio850 was awarded Top Chef of Polk County 2018. Chef Matt Fulwood from The Blue Palmetto Cafe at Bok Tower Gardens and Chef Wayne Haggard from Spectra Food Services at the RP Funding Center were both awarded Top Table Decor.
